The thing is, the faceplate was held in by two screws, and one of them was so rusted and stripped it wouldn't budge. This takes specialized tools to get rid of, and nothing I bought did the trick. So I had/was acquiring the know-how, but was stymied by the equipment.
Short version? I wound up calling the landlord after all. My pride isn't too hurt, and my feet are grateful.

I'm glad to hear you got it fixed properly. It's one thing learning, and being willing/able, to repair minor problems, but in our experience there are two things best not to mess with - wiring and plumbing.
I love the title of that Laurie Anderson song. I'm reminded of her grace when she spoke about Lou Reed doing Tai Chi with his hands during his final days.
All in all it's a fine FR10 with a few more of my favorites. I didn't know Taj Mahal had done a version of Johnny Too Bad.
Yeah, having a tub full of stagnant water all that time was not a good experience. Hopefully it was educational at least. I'm limiting myself to minor plumbing and like you say, not messing with wiring at all.
Laurie and Lou were an odd couple, but they seem to have been a good one. It's an interesting song, too.
