Let's give him a hand

Why I Love Last Days by Brian Evenson from Victoria Blake on Vimeo.

This is a pretty concise and apt synopsis of Last Days, by Brian Evenson, a book I'm in the midst of reading now. What can I say? It's got an interesting plot, and some pretty humorous passages. It's also got a premise involving a religious order that believes lopping off body parts is the way to get closer to God, and it does its best to live up to that premise. I can see why a larger publisher might not find this a good investment.

That sounds like one very strange mystery book. I always kind of thought that once tattoos become passe (apologize for no accent aigu) that the trendy set might start lopping off pieces of themselves. The Yakuza are already well known for that practice if they mess up.

Yeah, I'm not sure how to do fancy stuff like accents and umlauts in these comments sections myself, although I can swing it in actual posts.

There's a Ray Bradbury story called "The Watchful Poker Chip of H. Matisse" that touches on the idea of fashionable dismemberment. It's paired with really strange prosthetics.

And of course the Yakuza don't mess around.
