Eye contact

The above image is a photo taken by Vivian Maier, and shows her eye for charming detail. From the styles on display most of her pictures appear to have been taken in the 1950s and 60s, although she lived until 2009 and some are probably later (than the 60s, not her death in 2009. Although that would make a great story.) The fact that her photography wasn't really discovered during her lifetime is interesting. What creative things do people around us get up to that we never even guess about?

According to the wikipedia article Vivian Maier must have taken thousands upon thousands of photographs over the course of many years. Although she was definitely a remarkable street photographer, it appears she kept her practice largely a secret for most of her life. I wonder if she didn't know she was a genius? There very well might be some people equally dedicated to their art but it's very hard to imagine anyone nowadays so skilled and yet as introverted as Vivian Maier.

An article about Allen Dulles I found interesting.

I don't think there's much Venn diagram overlap between people who think they're geniuses and actual geniuses. She liked taking photographs and she was good at it. She probably knew that much. But she may have also thought that she might jeopardize future employment if everyone found out she was always snapping away. And if she thought that she wouldn't have been wrong, exactly. It's lucky for us that she was able to create and her creations eventually found their way out into the world.
