Question from the curious

Here's a sincere question: How do you surprise people you meet? I mean pleasant surprise. Not, say, jumping out from behind a tree and shrieking. It's easy to become perfunctory in your dealings with others. I think most of us do to some extent. But sometimes you see people breaking out of that.

A short answer is to be interested in them. Not all friendly remarks are welcomed but often they are and that's always a good thing. Of course these days with so many people engrossed with their smart phones it can be hard to get a person's attention at all.

That's a good answer. I think people do appreciate it if you're interested in them. Which I am, although I'm also often too self conscious to connect.

Yeah, it's weird to be in a public place and realize you're the only one doing anything other than staring at your phone.
