Spooky times

So there seems to be an unwritten rule that if Halloween falls on a weekday, the Saturday before it is basically Halloween (observed.) For adults, anyway. Kids trick-or-treat on October 31 as they always did. But the costume parties and other events crest on Saturday night.

And sometimes there are things going on Saturday during the day. Today I was in the supermarket and saw Freddie Krueger. Well, a guy dressed as him. Minus the scars. And the knives on the hands. I don't think the store would have appreciated him slicing up fruit he wasn't going to buy.

The celebration of Hallowe'en in Canada has become fraught with rules about what costumes the children can or can't wear. No cowboys and Indians, traditional or religious head dresses, geisha costumes, or Day of the Dead makeup. One primary school in Winnipeg gave up on Oct. 31st altogether and declared it 'tie and scarf' day. You just know no kids were involved in that decision.

It makes sense not to deliberately offend people but generalizing that no child should wear a costume from any different culture, or told they can't pretend or imagine themselves to be from another background seems pretty mean spirited.

Hopefully things are more enjoyable for the kids there. That was a very droll remark about the sliced fruit. Happy Hallowe'en.

The urge to protect kids is one I understand. Still, they need to be able to do their own thing and maybe make mistakes while doing so. It's one thing to protect them from physical harm, and even that can be taken too far. Blocking off whole areas of ideas isn't good for them at all. Or for the rest of us, for that matter.

Wow. There's nothing kids like better than scarves and ties, huh?

Thank you. Seemed appropriate to the occasion.
