Out back there

Kangaroos, even putting aside their marsupial attributes, aren't quite like anything that lives outside of Australia. Their heads are somewhat deerlike, but the way they get around is of course more reminiscent of rabbits, especially jackrabbits. But much bigger. And they're impressively tough, as well. How much of this is an adaptation to the harsh environment of the Outback, I wonder.

Kangaroos are certainly impressive enough looking that I know I wouldn't want to mess with one - despite their benign expressions. I remember reading about boxing matches that were staged between humans and kangaroos in the late 19th century in yet another example of human ignorance (not only long ago either, it would appear).

Ah well, my own favorite marsupial would have to be the quokka. :)

Oh yes, you don't want to get on the bad side of a kangaroo...or especially a group of them. I've read that the most dangerous animal in Africa is the ostrich, Because an animal is herbivorous, that doesn't mean it's harmless.

Quokkas are very fetching. The one that featured in that video looked peppy, wide eyes and all.
