Let there be...

All day there's been a National Grid truck across the street. National Grid is the predominant electric company in this area. I heard voices coming from the radio on the truck, but couldn't make out what they were saying. Tonight there was also a police car and a whole bunch of traffic cones lining the street.

It looks to me now like they may be relighting one of the street lights. About across the street from my building there's a pole, but it hasn't produced light for months. Which was kind of annoying, if nothing else, so if that is the case I'll be glad for the change.

One of life's little mysteries is the public works one; they paint lines, put up cones, leave a truck or two parked outside for hours and then disappear without doing anything.

Just recently around here a long narrow house that sat tight between two others was torn down and trucked away. It had been a kind of interesting place for the simple reason that at some point the previous owners had turned the room closest to the street into a garage for a small car. Now and then the door would be open and we'd see one parked there in a space still decorated with old wallpaper. Now they've dug a hole and built some very flimsy foundation walls but we can't see how they're going to manage building another house, or why in that spot for that matter. Another mystery.

Oh, you're not lying about the public works thing. Case in point, the street light is still out and that patch of the street is still dark, so now I have no idea what all the trucks were about.

The house you describe sounds almost like a spite house. That raises the question of whether anyone would tear down a spite house and build a new one in its place. Maybe if the grudge goes on for a few generations.
