Monday I went to Aldi's. Mostly a routine grocery shopping trip. I did spend several minutes trying to find some kind of breaded fish cutlets, but alas my search was in vain. A woman was grabbing all the packages of ciabatta bread rolls, although she was kind enough to leave me one. Looked like panic buying, although buying more than you need of a highly perishable good is never good.
The next day I went to CVS. At the checkout the manager was grousing about Halloween products. Outside of some of the candy they have none. It was never delivered.
Little and not-so-little absences from store shelves have gotten a lot more common over the past few months. There are a number of reasons for it. How much the federal government is responsible is up for debate. Most of the media is unwilling to really interrogate the Biden administration on it, or anything else. If that's supposed to be a favor I suspect it's going to backfire eventually.

When the pandemic was still young, spring of 2020, a few things disappeared from stores around here temporarily - like flour in smaller than 20lb bags and the same with sugar. The other thing hard to find was toilet paper. Why anyone would hoard that is beyond me but it did happen. One afternoon around that time as we walked along one of the neighborhood streets we noticed a man sitting on a chair in front of his open garage door. Inside the garage what should we see but stacks and stacks of plastic wrapped toilet rolls.. Maybe he was hoping to make a killing in the unused paper racket.
While it hasn't got that bad again since those early days it's still true you can't always count on finding what you're looking for. You're right there are many reasons and a big part of it can be laid at the feet of the people in charge - all of them including sleepy Joe. I read today there's hope the problem of shortages will be resolved soon. Let's hope so.
On another topic entirely, you too might have fun watching 'this drummer is at the wrong gig'. The guy wound up becoming sort of famous after an audience member filmed this particular video and posted it online.
There do seem to have been a few runs (pun very much not intended) on toilet paper. A few do seem to have gotten it into their heads that they could resell it for more on the black market, or maybe even use it for currency. I mean, it's not unimaginable, but since it's one of those things that actually does get produced in this country--and Canada too, of course--the likelihood is pretty low. Knock on wood.
What we see from our leaders is either dithering or--perhaps worse--pursuing some secret agenda that the citizens wouldn't even want and doing so at the expense of their actual jobs. It's hard to tell where one begins and the other ends. At any rate, the competence of the political class is in severe doubt.
That actually was an enjoyable video. I wouldn't say that he was at the wrong gig, really. His flamboyance strikes me as what Rick K. and the Allnighters needed. Anyway, found an interview with him.
