Blessed relief

Numerous times in the past I've gone out when it was overcast or drizzling, taking my umbrella along. Ah, but then it either stops raining or never starts. The day weather might even clear up, the bastard! Which if that happens I might clean forget to bring the umbrella home with me.

Tonight I thought that might have happened, but then I checked the bag I was carrying and found I'd placed the umbrella in there just to avoid that situation. So I've started thinking a step or two ahead, even if I momentarily forget doing so.

Unlike hats and gloves umbrellas are hard to shove in a pocket and, no matter how compact (below a certain size one may as well wear a hat) they tend to be unwieldy or they dangle from that silly loop making them a distraction. As such it seems like as often as not we tend to 'forget' them because they are silly things. Goodness knows if it's raining and windy both then they can actually hamper forward movement or any movement in a desired direction at all - never mind that one always has to worry about poking people who may or may not be carrying umbrellas of their own. That reminds me of the irritation I feel toward those who carry golf umbrellas on busy sidewalks (how much personal space can one person need?). But overall, having one handy when a light drizzle turns into a downpour can be very satisfying. I'm glad you remembered to put yours in a bag because you never know what might happen out there. Carrying a tissue is a good idea too even if you haven't sneezed in a while.

You'd need to have pretty voluminous pockets to securely carry even a folding umbrella in them. It's possible in a really long coat, but not something most of us wear most of the time. And the old style umbrellas are out of the question.

They can indeed be silly. As I've said, if the wind is high enough it will get pulled inside out, which eventually or not so eventually stands to destroy the thing outright. But while we tend to get high winds in this part of the continent, we get heavy weather a lot of the time in general. So eventually you'll wish you still had one if you don't. And yes, the wisdom of carrying a few tissues in case you get a runny nose or the like can't be overstated.

The people who carry golf umbrellas on busy sidewalks wouldn't be so bad if they held them high enough and let everyone walk under them, but that's generally not the way things go. Shame.
