The nature of things

Can't let another summer go by without playing some Beach Boys, and this might be my favorite song of theirs. Neck and neck with "God Only Knows" at least. It has a lot of the Brian Wilson hallmarks, but in a slightly spooky format. The lyrics are sort of like what Gerard Manley Hopkins might come up with if he wrote R&B love songs.

ah, the beach boys! always refreshing! &, best of all, always summer!...

we recently enjoyed a couple of great music documentaries, one being 'muscle shoals', & the other, 'the wrecking crew'. the latter of whom were, among many other things, brian wilson's primary collaborators during his peak creative period ('pet sounds', smiley smile', 'wild honey'). strongly recommend both, if you can find'm. so much musical magic...

yeah, 'let the wind blow' is an very acceptable choice as a favorite: nice bits of classic psychedelic dissonance, wrapped around a sweet, simple, heartfelt love song. me, i'm gonna have to go with the one that, starting with the very first time i ever heard it, has never failed to bring a smile to my face, & joy to my heart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVu7pyjG9AU

may your inner summer never end! :) ...

The Wrecking Crew were pretty fascinating. There were a whole bunch of them over the years. One cool thing about them is that well before the trend of having women on bass - peaking sometime in the 90s I think - their top bassist was Carol Kaye. Aside from Brian Wilson, Arthur Lee also used them to fill out the sound on Love's Forever Changes and also motivate his band through competition.

"Heroes and Villains", lest I forget, is another great song. Liked this semi-orchestral take, even if it does kind of hurt watching Wilson try to look happy. I love the block-and-mallet percussionist.
