I have a friend who's always asking if I'm writing anything. This past weekend I couldn't really say yes. There was an idea, it seemed interesting but... Every time I tried to do anything with it I lost my way.
Now I think I may have something. It's a weird idea, still, but Hugh Greene's The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes anthology is helping. I needed a structure to work with, and one of the stories therein sort of provided me with it. This is a story I can actually look forward to working on.

It sounds about right to me that you found something to inspire you in older stories. I hadn't heard of this book before but now you've mentioned it I may have to order a copy. The Affair of the Avalanche Bicycle and the Assyrian Rejuvenator are great titles.
It's funny you say your not familiar with it. I could have sworn we had a copy at home back in the day. Maybe it was at Nanna's place, though. It's amazing how many of these stories are narrated by Boswell figures. The influence of Doyle, although I think he got the idea from Poe. As far as I can tell that method has largely disappeared from contemporaray detective stories. If anything, first person narration by the lead character is overused now.
