Not another separated at birth movie

Earlier tonight I watched Hayao Miyazaki's aviation adventure Porco Rosso. It's a fun movie with beautiful animation, but something struck me. Namely, the eerie resemblance between the hero...

... and Andy Kaufman's troublesome friend Tony Clifton.

Ha. Clifton could only wish that a beautiful singing restaurateur would fall for him.

We recently watched 'Castle in the Sky' for the second or third time. Miyazaki's films are all beautiful to look at but what makes them special is his ability to portray mature themes in cartoons without getting all smarmy.

It's interesting you thought of Tony Clifton and Porco Rosso. Porco states at one point he'd rather be a pig than a fascist. Andy Kaufman certainly took that philosophy to its limit.

It's a fantasy and by and large it's happy being a fantasy. The line about being a pig or a fascist is a gentle reminder of what was happening in the real world where the time was set. And of course imperialism was coming to a nasty climax iin Japan too.

Really I've only seen a little of Miyazaki, but I'll be seeing more.
