...to know which way the wind blows

Windows downloaded another update a couple of days ago. Now the taskbar permanently displays weather and temperature.

I'm of two minds. Could be handy, but if you're online this is information it's easy to look up anyway. And if you hover the cursor over this icon a selection of the latest headlines will pop up. I really don't need this, and don't trust anyone's news priorities except my own.

We're not big fans of automatic updates either, the creepiest are the ones that show up overnight when the computer has been switched off. How do they do that?

I'm lucky in having someone who's good at fixing the background stuff so my desktop looks the way I want it to. I don't know how annoying the new updates are for you (I'd hate having news headlines appear) but you might be able to remove or hide aspects you'd prefer not to see. Here's a website with info you might find useful.

The categories of "off" and "on" seem to have become fuzzy in recent years. There are little recesses available to the manufacturer, although the user doesn't even know about them. The only thing that really bugs me is that you tend to only find out afterwards--if ever--what the update does, which might be something you actively don't want.

Generally the background looks like what I want it to. The newsflashes are genuinely annoying and I close them as soon as they open. So I appreciate the link that might help me neutralize them.
