Roadwork

A huge stretch of street is now semi-exposed near where I live. The top pavement has been removed, anyway, revealing a ridged, sort of corduroy-like element. This has its annoyances. There's more dust in the air, and I'm sure it's not much fun to drive on. Still, it's kind of educational. It's the equivalent of walking past buildings where the wiring and plumbing is exposed.

Having grown up in the countryside I remember on a class nature walk the teacher telling us how early roads were made on marshy land. The practice was to cut down trees and to place the logs horizontally along the route - thus corduroy roads.

It sounds to me like the plan is to resurface your street. They finally did that here after more than three months of sewer work.

That's a pretty elemental way to build a road. Effective for some purposes. By the time I visited the same place the main road was cement. It depends how many cars are going by and what the drivers expect.

They've done some resurfacing at this point. It's uneven. Some stretches of road are still torn up, others are pretty much unbuilt, and a few in the middle are topped with tarry asphalt.
