Wooden acting

Please enjoy this most cool overview of the African art of puppet making. Or rather the work of African artisans involved in puppetry. There's a level of craft here that seems to go back years, maybe generations, whether or not those generations are in the same family. Yet at the same time they remains flexible, open to outside influences and ideas.

It's always amazing to see beings made manifest through simple materials fashioned by imaginative people. The Malian ones seemed to be the most frequently shown in this video and all of them very different. I also liked the linked up South African puppets at the end.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that puppetry is the oldest form of theater.

The Malian puppets were very distinct from each other, it's true. They tended to be very expressive, though. I liked what I saw from Togo as well.

Given that, as a species, one of our first social gathering places was around a fire, it seems very likely some form of puppetry arose early.
