Year 5

Just a couple of decades behind the rest of the world, I've started watching The Sopranos. The wrong way round, apparently. That is I didn't realize when I was making the order, but what I'm seeing is season 5, the final season. What I've heard is that the writers gradually made Tony worse over time. It shows. James Gandolfini is great in the part, but it's a little wearing. Lorraine Bracco as Melfi is equally great, painting in a cooler palette.

Steve Buscemi hasn't shown up in the first episode, but he's been shown on TV wearing a really bad mullet. I have a feeling his character's main issue is going to be the long-term effects of having that hair.

We only watched the show in the past couple of years too; however, we did watch them in the correct order. The first three were our real favorites, so much so that if we were to watch the program again we might just see those instead of the full six (yes, there were six). The entire cast was brilliant but it was always James Gandolfini who was the power source of every episode. I hope seeing the fifth hasn't spoiled your desire to watch the series as it was meant to be seen.

By now you likely know how Steve Buscemi fared hair and all.

The first episode might have been more off-putting than I was prepared for, with Tony's heavy-handed stalking of Dr. Melfi. Having gotten into the rhythm of it, the show is pretty fascinating. Tony himself is - what's the word? - not exactly likable, but he's got a certain charm and seductiveness. And occasional flashes of decency. So I probably will dig back and see the earlier episodes.

Buscemi gives a great performance as well. The thing is, even though he's Italian-American from New York and can play tough, he'd be miscast in a straight-ahead mafioso role. Luckily what he's actually playing is an intelligent misfit giving into his dark side.

Also one of the FBI agents gets the hilarious line, "Good-looking woman and she wants to fuck Barney Rubble."
