Now I know my ABZs

Ah, Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book. My parents brought home a copy of this book when I was a kid. Couldn't tell you my exact age but we're not talking little kid. Not young enough to take all the entries at face value. I thought the book was funny, and I was right.

I didn't, at the time, know about Shel Silverstein's career as a singer-songwriter. But that's what a lot of people know him as primarily. In fact "A Boy Named Sue", one of Johnny Cash's best known songs, is technically a Shel Silverstein cover. You can see where they came from the same mind.

I'm pretty sure I know which parent brought home the ABZ Book. Since we no longer have a copy I checked it out on archive.org:

O is for Oz
Do you want to visit the wonderful far-off land of Oz where the wizard lives and scarecrows can dance and the road is made of yellow bricks and everything is emerald green?
Well, you can't because there is no Land of Oz and there is no woodsman and THERE IS NO SANTA CLAUS!
Maybe someday you can go to Detroit.

It's still pretty funny.

Of all his poems and books I mostly remember The Giving Tree.

I guess the book didn't make it through all the moves you've done since then. Ah well. Memories at least.

And yes, they do have it on the Internet Archive as well. I saw one of my favorite pages.

I is for Ink
Ink is black and wet.
Ink is fun.
What can you do with Ink?
What rhymes with ink?

I had forgotten he did The Giving Tree as well. Everyone knows that one.
