Brian Eno has always stated that Stranded was his favorite Roxy Music album. Which is big of him to say, since it was the first album they made after he was basically canned from the group. I'm not sure it's their best, but it is quite good.
This song in particular sounds like something Eno would be involved in, starting at freakout and ending at hush. Probably would have sounded a little different if he were still with them, but still feels like his kind of thing.

If I hadn't already known Eno was gone by then I'd have guessed he was still largely in charge of the sound. Considering the fact they had all been developing in the same decanter I guess the fact they it isn't too surprising there was still a close resemblance. Goodness knows, Eno managed to change the tone of glam rock to suit his own vision when he made Here Come the Warm Jets a few years later.
Jer sent me a tweet this morning of Herbie Hancock telling the story of what Miles Davis taught him about life.
That's a good assessment. They had all been playing together for such an amount of time--intense, although not going back for years and years--that there was a kind of behavioral imprinting. They were still musical relatives, although he was a different person on a different path.
That's a neat story from Herbie Hancock. It's kind of a surprise, because Miles Davis strikes me as someone who'd be a terrifying perfectionist. But he had a good attitude about the unexpected.
