As it happens

Not too surprisingly summer leads the other three seasons in days you can sleep with the windows open. Days you pretty much have to as well. So things that happen in the street you can hear loud and clear. I don't pay attention to the details, which don't really make sense out of context anyway. A few weeks ago a drunk woman was freaking out at her boyfriend sometime in the AM. Luckily, it was a weekend. He was in his car, though, so I had to wonder why he didn't just drive away sooner.

Drunks and the drug addled can break up a quiet night, especially quiet summer nights. They aren't so likely to stay out long in cold wet weather.

We rarely look either, except when fire engines and ambulances pull up outside our place. That can get one's attention.

Yeah, only the truly around-the-bend will stay out screaming in 10 Fahrenheit weather. Such people exist, but mercifully you don't come across them very often.

Emergency vehicles have those telltale spinning lights, too. It's only natural to look out when you see them.
