Goobers

Say you're starting to get peckish. Dinners not for another couple or few hours, and you don't want to spoil it by eating a lot. But hunger will distract you from anything else you're doing if you don't eat something.

Peanuts sometimes work. I tend to have a jar of roasted peanuts lying around. But peanut butter seems to be more efficient. Today one spoonful did the trick. Granted, it was a pretty big spoon.

I know the feeling. Sometimes the digestive system needs a little reassurance it hasn't been forgotten.

Meanwhile, I thought I'd share some words of wisdom I saved:
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year-old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

In a book about Buddhism you once sent me there was this lady who got trapped in a cave while spelunking. Since she had limited supplies she meditated every day with the object of taking in less food for each day. It's admirable discipline, and does boggle my imagination a little.

That's a pretty good line by Rogers. In truth I've gotten more sympathetic to Ayn Rand's philosophy, just because I've seen how easily normal human behavior can be condemned by manipulative sorts as selfishness. Still don't know if I'll get around to reading her novels, though. Seem like heavy going.
