Bra för dem

Apparently, Abba have gotten back together and are releasing a new album in just a couple of months. Will it be as good as their old stuff? Tall order, but even if not I approve. The timescale of the decision suggests a lack of trendiness. The strike-while-the-iron's-hot time for a reunion would have been about 25 years ago, when a couple of Aussie movie soundtracks brought them back into the mainstream. So their music was in--albeit sort of quaint even back then--then out, then back in, and has just been part of the woodwork for a bunch of years now. Who would suspect?

A new album along with a concert sounds pretty interesting after so long away from the limelight but using digital avatars for a series of big production stage shows is a bit over the top. Maybe not, though, after everybody's got used to having zoom friends and acquaintances. Still, I rather wish they were preparing a stage return themselves. They may be old but they're obviously not yet decrepit.

It's funny to recall that an ABBA album was one your nanna had bought before we visited home one year. Their 1974 Eurovision win was a delightful surprise to many.

Yeah, the digital avatar idea doesn't really do anything for me either. Although seeing them in the motion capture suits did give me the amusing idea of the four of them doing dueling Gollums. If Devo did it the virtual aspect might be a high concept or a joke. In Abba's case it's probably more a case of being efficient. Again, not really inspiring.

Well, they were an infectious bunch. Nanna got it. The footage of their winning performance on Eurovision is quite enjoyable, even if the announcer doesn't know how to pronounce "Bjorn."
