Emptied out

So yeah, this.

I passed by the location of the old Cable Car the other day and took a look inside. Not much to see. The counter where they served food and beverages is still there, for now. That's just until they can haul it away.

As my friend Gary says, RISD's kicking them out doesn't make sense. Nothing is likely to have the same draw, so do they think they'll be making more money?

Of course I also wonder why they never applied to be a historic site. Seems like they would have qualified.

It's sad to see yet another of these fine old venues closed after so long. Over the years a lot of people enjoyed films and one another's company watching them. I wonder if part of it isn't that young people prefer their 'smart' devices to being out in the real world and the rest like to stay home and stream.

The last second run movie theater here in Halifax closed this past winter after having been in business an equally long time.

You're likely right they could have applied for historic listing but maybe the owners no longer saw the point in holding on to the business.

You're right about people enjoying each other's company there as well, and that's the kind of thing that gets lost. Among other things we're going to have to spend decades rebuilding the idea of social interaction. As a bone deep introvert I can see that.

That would be the Oxford Theatre, wouldn't it? That's another sad story. It looked like a nice old place.

As far as I understand RISD is actually the landlord, so the decision about the actual building was made by them. That's disappointing, because they should understand the importance of places like these.
