Now hear these

This has always been one of my Platonic ideals of an absolutely gorgeous song. I never thought of such a radical reworking, though, the whole a capella thing. Kudos to whoever thought of the whole "Frere Jacques" opening.

Just to compare with the original. I'm guessing there was a little Talking Heads influence, but they were already their own thing.

I like the combination of the two versions. TMBG was ingenious in their ability to turn next to nothing music-wise (at least in the beginning) into remarkable and very timely songs that always pushed the boundaries. Dial-A-Song was an extremely cool idea. You're right they were their own thing from the beginning.

Sometimes I can't help but think that people singing together is the coolest thing humans can do.

True, it was pretty much just the two Johns for their first several albums. Whether this was a matter of not being able to afford a band or not finding musicians they were in sync with I don't know, but they certainly didn't let it stop them. I saw an interview where John Flansburgh said that when they were away on tour his landlady would change the tapes for the Dial-A-Song answering machine, an image that tickles me.

I like the idea of people who don't have trained singing voices still being able to pitch in, as it were.
