Just caws

The other day I saw a guy at a bus stop with pigeons crawling on him. Well, perching on him. He had seeds he was feeding them from a little packet. Well, you gotta love pigeon people.

Anyway, the following video isn't about pigeons, but it is avian in subject matter. The sounds made by corvids aren't always tuneful in the way you expect birds to be, but they bring me a peaceful feeling.

Pigeons are okay but I haven't let them get near me since the time I stupidly went to Trafalgar Square in November, after the tourists had all gone home, and tried to eat a sandwich. I've never forgotten their scrabbling claws and beady little eyes - and there were hundreds of them. I threw away the sandwich.

One of the very good things about the internet is that it allows us to see in action some of the wonderful things in nature we might otherwise miss. You know we're very fond of crows and they are clever, ravens maybe even more so, but the video I found about crows is the one I'll share with you. Although it's nearly ten minutes long it has some very interesting details.

That's a memorable story about Trafalgar Square. I'm sure the fact that the tourists had all left had something to do with it. Usually pigeons are running around because there are so many people and so much food, whereas this time they could focus. Still, did you look around for Alfred Hitchcock making a cameo appearance?

I like the narration on that video. She sounds Canadian although it's possible she's from one of the Northern plains states. The West Nile virus parts were worrisome, but do acquit them of spreading it. I hope the disease has plateaued with them. Iridescent black can be beautiful but what really makes them striking is the way they cut across the sky or the snowy ground.
