Correlation

Sorry to be beating a dead horse here. But two years and several months after the COVID-19 crisis was announced, some people are still masking outside. Like, religiously. And one thing I've noticed about the majority, I think, is that their eyes are glued to their phones.

Correlation is not causation? Sure. But I get impressions. And it strikes me that for a certain subset of the population, what they read about on their phones is the truth and what's in front of their faces is a lie. A grim kind of Gnosticism.

Having noticed the holdout maskers too, we've come to several possible conclusions. First are the families out walking and none of them wearing masks but for the youngest. These kids have been traumatized. Then there are the very old who may be ill and are afraid. Nothing to be done about them. Next are the mentally deficient who were told to wear a mask but nobody has told them to stop. They want to keep doing the right thing. Last are the young and arrogant wearing their N95 or designer cloth masks. There again there's nothing to say - in fact, they won't make eye contact because THEY'RE LOOKING AT THEIR PHONES. Phones don't tell the truth, they keep people in their own narrow channels of belief.

The case of families where only the kids are masked--and I see it now and then as well--indicate that public health has really dropped the ball on messaging. Or alternately, that they've been meticulous in conveying false impressions, but why would they ever do that? It's not too surprising that a number of the elderly are scared and easily led, although that's not a universal thing. And I do think there are a lot of people who are waiting for the go-ahead from the proper authorities that they can stop worrying and go back to their normal lives. That will never happen, and I hope a few more catch on.

Maybe technological development is like cell growth: healthy up to a certain point, after which it starts to become destructive.
