chirp chirp

Part of the environmental sound, along with the hum of the refrigerator, is the humming of crickets. You associate them with the country, but they're urban, too. The sound is soothing from a distance. Once, I think when I was in college, I came home and saw a big cricket in my room. That freaked me out. Probably because I'm always trying to keep my conscience at bay.

Crickets and grasshoppers are nice enough to listen to from the comfort of a decent distance but I'm not all that fond of them close by either. The most annoying summer insects I remember from childhood, besides mosquitos, were the June bugs - brown beetles just under half an inch long that encrusted backlit screen doors and windows. It was a trick getting inside yourself while keeping them out.

Of course the other often heard and rarely seen east coast insect is the inimitable hot bug. Do you remember we found a dead one one time when we were walking through Roger Williams Park. It looked like a very big house fly and there was a herd of ants trying to carry it away. Odd the things I recall.

Yeah, June bugs are not too pleasing to the eye, and their habit of clinging to screen doors sounds like it would be annoying. I remember than Nanna's house had sliding doors in a few spots. That's better. That way you can move them sideways and they're no closer to getting indoors. Getting past them with a regular door would be trickier.

Hot bugs are also known as cicadas. We must have had the annual kind living near us. I know they weren't waiting for 17 years to all come out at once. The scene with the ants sound weird. I don't know. I know a lot of insects are vital to the ecology, some more than others. But much of the time I'd prefer to be ignorant of what they do.
