All washed up?

What a day.

After work I headed home and packed a bunch of things to go to the laundry. When I got there I saw they were closed. ???! This laundromat until very recently was open every night until nine, although I've generally been able to get there during the day, which didn't work out this week for various reasons. On their door they announce "New Hours" the upshot of which is that they're closing every day at five now, with last wash at 3:30. To me that's not new hours, just cessation of the old ones.

My first reaction was uncomprehending rage. I knew I'd have to find a new laundry for weeks when I had to do wash at night, and didn't like the rug being pulled out from me. Then I started to wonder how much longer they'd be in business at all. No matter how you slice it, a business lopping 28 hours of of it's week isn't a healthy sign. Then I thought of the employees. This reduction means that somebody got fired, or found their full-time job changed to a part time one. That truly does suck.

As if a laundry bag weren't unwieldy enough anyway, I can only imagine your irritation at having to carry it all home again unwashed. I agree that a sign saying 'New Hours' generally indicates even more time available rather than less and I'm sorry this happened. Are there more new apartment buildings in your area that might have laundry facilities? If not, that is a very strange thing to do since I'm sure there are a number of people in your position. I hope there's another reasonably close by.

Well, it looks like it's down to the river to beat the rocks.

Yeah, I also meant to pick up a few things at the library that evening, and I could have made it just on time if I'd gone straight there. Instead I stopped off at home to pick up my laundry and was just a few fatal minutes too late. Then I walk over to the laundromat, figuring the night doesn't have to be a total waste, and I see that. So yeah, pretty irritating. They've since put a help-wanted sign in the window, so I don't know if it's just a matter of being short-handed. In the interim I'm going to a place on North Main, so I guess I'll live. It's hard to tell if a lot of apartment buildings have their own laundry facilities. When did that start to be a common thing?

NAGH, the Providence River is cleaner than it used to be, but I'm not sure I'd trust it that far.
