Deep down

You don't hear tubas that much anymore. Or at least you don't hear them in that many places. Jazz has gotten away from it, with a few exceptions. It's not often played in rock the way sax has made a kind of home there. For the most part it's exiled to the classical world and high school marching bands. But the tuba can definitely induce a mood.

This was such a beautifully moody piece of music I decided to look up the composer Etienne Crausaz, a Swiss, who turns out to be quite young - born in 1981 and now an extraordinary composer. He began as a primary school teacher and then started his studies to be a professional tuba player at university. Who could have guessed that was a specialty? You can find more of his compositions and samples thereof at the Brassband Music Shop.

Before this my favorite tuba piece was the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band performing 'Tubas in the Moonlight'.

I hadn't known anything about Etienne Crausaz, beyond his music here. And now I've heard some of his other music. "Balkan Dance" is a very invigorating piece. At a relatively young age he appears to have made quite a mark in music.

Ah, the Bonzos, introduced by a young Inspector Jack Frost. I don't think we'll see Viv Stanshall's like again.
