To live and die on late night

Make sure there aren't a lot of bugs near you before watching this, cuz your jaw is likely to hang open.

Points:

  • Kearney, who's billed as Saturday Night Live's first nonbinary cast member, has previously self-identified onstage as an "Irish Catholic lesbian." Far be it for me to suggest that a "she" decided to become a "they" for career juice, but the timing is a little convenient.
  • Not sure why an enbee would be the go-to person for commentary on trans-related bills, or if there even is a go-to person.
  • Indeed, when some people hear the word "trans" they do forget the word "kids." That seems to be the point of the phrase "trans kids." But who's doing the forgetting, and who wants them to forget?
  • You might be asking yourself, "When does the funny part begin?" Sadly, I'm afraid you and I missed it.

what is it about loud, obnoxious fat people that's so instantly hilarious/endearing to a saturday night live crowd (& how is it that, week after week, the audience's 'laughter' sounds so remarkably identical each time?). chris farley always disturbed, rather than amused me, & molly kearney does as well...

i believe you are correct - declaring oneself 'non-binary' out of the blue is fundamentally all upside at this moment in time. &, like yourself, we will always mistrust the way that the concept of 'trans kids' is so casually, offhandedly tossed about. you might like this recent article from an old favorite of mine, matt bruenig:

Admittedly they got good results out of the gate with John Belushi. Of course Belushi, whatever toll his private habits took on him, was always tightly controlled as a performer. That's the part that got lost in translation with Chris Farley. Kearney has built so closely on Farley that it's eerie and a little depressing.

LGBTQ+ representation has gotten very big at the CIA and the big military contractors. Just a thought, but maybe you can't get that kind of influence without it going both ways.

Bruenig makes some very good points. For me, liberalism is a good standard for holding public debate, but it can't provide the answer to every question. This kind of childhood identity seeking is beyond its grasp.
