The last couple of hours I've been hearing high winds outside. I mean, there's a loud, eerie keening in the air and the windows will shake now and then. Didn't get anything like this during the day. The temperature hasn't dropped enough for the heat to kick on. But I'm guessing that there's a sizable difference out there between mercury temperature and "feels like" temperature.

The wind will definitely provide that difference. This 'feels like' thing in weather reports is a fairly new addition. I remember it used to get cold in other winters, but we never heard how it felt. I mean, to whom?
Hopefully, the strong winds presage warmer temperatures on the way.
Strong winds have their place, and they tend to make the world more exciting as well. You just have to dress for it, unless the temps are very high to begin with. I'm not too surprised that "feels like" reports are fairly new. News is packaged more as a consumer service now.
We definitely seem to be getting a thaw.
