Pining for...

Wildlife isn't necessarily what Europe is known for, and especially Northern Europe. But it's there if you look for it. All those gulls and guillemots rising into the air must be a pretty wild sight when you're there.

You're right that they make a very impressive sight, as does the pristine northern environment. We never made it to Newfoundland in the time we've been here (a long drive to the northern tip of NS and then an 8 hour ferry trip) but it's also a place famous for its fjords, cliffs and sea birds. Just once when we were walking through the park we were stunned to see a flock of gannets fishing. Naturally we stayed to watch as long as they were there. They were beautiful.

The fjords of Newfoundland could well have been connected to the ones in Northern Europe at one time. Not Beringia, of course, since that connected the Western part of North America with Eurasia. But that gives you some idea of what a huge chunk of time we're talking about.

Gannets are breathtaking. Just seeing them dive from the sky to the water, becoming aquatic in a matter of seconds, is to get an idea how clever and mercurial nature can be.
