Questionable

It was this past weekend that I read―I believe in the hard copy New York Times―about a bestselling novelist who's retiring from fiction writing in order to devote his time to political activism. And the activism thus far is put in terms of opposing Donald Trump.

And of course it's his choice. But if you're going to retire from what you've been doing and had success doing, I think there are better reasons to do so than just being against one guy. One guy whose political career is in its final stages one way or another. And if Trump is reelected it doesn't seem to me that he'll be short of critics.

It's a persistent problem that I see. Many people are elevating very superficial things into supposed matters of great importance.

I've never read a book by Don Winslow so the first thing I did was hop over to wikipedia to read his bio. Well, rats, he's nearly as old as me and has had a very successful writing career - it was likely time for him to retire anyway. I saw that wiki had mentioned something in passing about a lawsuit:

When he got even more recognition after making videos trashing Donald Trump he went a step further by tweeting that Trump had ordered a doctor to perform illegal hysterectomies on women who were in DHS facilities. Thankfully, the doctor was exonerated and Winslow had to pay reparations (at least I hope he did), but this is nasty stuff.

It's true that one way or another Donald Trump is near the end of his political career. You're right also in noting that elevating superficial things into matters of great importance has become widespread - the nobodies involved in persecuting (not prosecuting) him have run rampant. All things considered he's put up a pretty good fight, the stress of which could be fatal to most of us. What Trump is doing isn’t rational considering the opposition he faces, but he keeps on fighting. Like him or not, you have to admire his persistence.

I guess different people choose different times to retire from writing. Maybe there's an element here of being jaded by success. Like you, I've never read a book by him. That lawsuit and what led up to it are so weird that I had forgotten the whole incident was real

When you're messing around with other people's professional reputation you really have to make sure you know what you're talking about. You really don't want to make wild claims about them that you can't back up. A doctor performing hysterectomies on unwilling patients. It has happened in the past, I know, but damn, why wouldn't you check on that one first?

I do admire his persistence (Trump's, that is) and recognize that the media has been much more slanderous towards him than they usually dare to be with politicians of either party. They say things about his wife and teenage son that are over the line. I do with that he was as much of an outsider as he initially appeared to be, that the Beltway establishment had as much to fear as they seem to think they do. But it's questionable whether anyone like that could actually be elected and survive.
