This little bit of avian-automotive impersonation is something I didn't know about until today. But it's good news, really. It's no secret that we've had a pretty heavy and not always positive effect on the environment. Animals that are attuned to technological change and can mimic it have a survival advantage.
Oh, and one might think the mockingbird frequents a rough neighborhood. But car alarms are so sensitive, I wouldn't assume so.

Listening to the mockingbird's imitation of a car alarm was far more pleasant than hearing the real thing. That has to be the most annoying sound one can experience in a city. The bird's version was very sweet.
Most people disengage their car alarms pretty quickly, but there are always a few who either don't care or don't know how. I remember reading about a case long ago in NYC when cars with alarms was new. Somebody parked one on a neighborhood street and by the time he returned his car had been destroyed by locals. I think the alarm had stopped by then.
I've gotten fairly inured to hearing car alarms through repeated exposure. Living in the dorms at college I remember hearing them a lot, which is also how I learned how hypersensitive they are. But yes, it's generally an annoying sound. Especially the ones that are made to sound like a car horn being pressed repeatedly.
That's a funny story. New Yorkers have their own way of dealing with irritants like that. Or at least they did. Maybe the more gentrified New York of today would discourage that kind of thing.
