I've come to admit to myself that I don't really "get" tattoos. Not that I think they always look horrible, and in the past I may have even thought to get one myself. The impulse passed. It's more that I don't see the appeal of getting one, then another, and then a bunch more. As a hobby, it costs you money. And going in to get inked, you're not doing anything or experiencing anything. They're just there from then on.

It's always seemed pretty weird to me the idea of deliberately having permanent marks that will last a lifetime - never mind the ones that were mistakes to begin with. Years ago when I worked for Dr. Golini he learned about my drawing abilities and wanted to set me up with tattooing gear. I told him I do a lot of erasing..
One interesting thing I found out is that sailors from long ago got tattoos so their bodies could be identified for Christian burial.
There seems to have been an arms race in recent years, as well as an every other part race. So many people have one or two now that the hardcore ink fan feels the need to get themselves absolutely covered. Problem being that there was no plan or design, so nothing really stands out.
That's an interesting flash about the reason sailors became known for having tattoos. They obviously picked it up from indigenous islanders, who were pagan, or at least as long as they could get away with it.
