Understandably, the first sad clown I thought of was Emmett Kelly. There's very little video of his performances.
It seemed unusual and affecting to me.
The studio audience had a huge reaction to seeing Kelly come out in his Weary Willy costume. That helped the panelist out, although she was clever too.
