Whatever your reason for posting this song it's always nice to listen to Warren Zevon. You're right that although irony was a very strong aspect of his personality what made us care for him was his compassion.
Yes, I don't know how he arrived at his compassion. Perhaps just by living. He didn't let it get in the way of a good joke, though.
