Respite

While out walking today I saw a flier taped to a pole. It announced a new club, a "no phones" club as it happened. Not that you're not allowed to own one. Just that you don't bring it to this particular place. Aptly enough the flier appeared to have been written out by hand.

I wonder how much of this is going on. Sure, people as a rule seem to like having everything at their fingertips. But the human mind and the human being weren't intended to be in the middle of an electronic communications grid 24/7. It makes sense that some feel a need to get away, if only temporarily.

I always feel sorry for those sad people we see in public glued to their screens unable to look around them, never mind say hello. What's worse is a number of them are as old as us.

I think it's pretty cool you'd see a hand written flier advertising a no phone club. There's no doubt too much time spent online is unhealthy when only a little online moderation is required to retake one's consciousness. A lot of people have forgotten what life is about while preferring to live theirs through the lens of others making money pretending to be something they're not. What's a like worth?

There's a good chance you may have witnessed a new trend among people rediscovering the benefits of analog life.

It's not too surprising that a lot of these users are about your age. We're talking about a business that trades on addictive and/or unhealthy behaviors, and markets that. The marketing is relentless, and it's done by professionals.

There was a store in town years ago that tried appealing to people who wanted to get away from the digital pace of contemporary life. It didn't last long at all. It might just be that a club is the better way to go. No need to make a profit right away, or ever.

A lot of people who think that their world is miserable because of Trump (or some liberal equivalent) might realize that there are more important and lasting things.
