Skimping

I saw a guy at the supermarket today wearing shorts. Short shorts. A friend of mine from a couple of years back was one of those guys who would switch to shorts as soon as it was spring on the calendar, even if the weather was still wintry. A little showoffy but I could see what he was going for. But today might turn out to be the coldest day of the year, and is likely to at least be in the top five. Whatever point you're trying to make, there are better ways to make it.

But that's me. I wore socks to bed last night and intend to do the same tonight.

It seems wherever one spends winter there are always at least a few young guys who wear shorts in cold weather. It looks like an affectation in that they're too proud to stoop to paying any attention to the weather. I wonder how any of them would react if they got home and found the door locked?

I'd be wearing socks to bed too or throwing an extra log on the fire if I had a fire, that is. Hot water bottles work well too but I don't like electric blankets. Come to think of it I far prefer adjusting layers to ease a cold night than a hot one. I can't bear to be overheated.

There are some people, including a few I've known, who start wearing shorts at vernal equinox regardless of whether the weather is actually springy. But at least at that point while it might still be cold, it's less likely to be arctic. As to what they'd do if they returned home to a locked door? Probably hope that their foolish choices wouldn't have too drastic an ill effect. If we're honest, we've all been there.

Keeping my socks on is just one of those things I've started doing when the night temperature gets noticeably below 20F. It especially makes sense since I've reached that age where I'm more likely to get up in the middle of the night. But yeah, I don't like being overheated either. That's one reason I do like having cooler/colder months.
