I note this not to be morbid, but as a kind of companion to other observations. You often see animals running across the street in a city. Cats seem to be very adept at it. But there's no guarantee of safety with this action. As is often the case. Drivers can do you in without--in most cases--intending to or even knowing you're there.

Thank goodness it's not a sight we come across very often but it has happened to us too. Poor things that weren't quite as quick as they needed to be - it's hard to imagine a mother rabbit hurrying along with her babies, isn't it?
We've told you about the local deer that are totally oblivious to the dangers inherent in roads and cars. The creatures I wouldn't mind seeing mowed down are the canada geese who stop the traffic with impunity whenever they get the urge to stroll down the street or maybe just sit down. Unfortunately, it's against the law to hit them.
Yes, luckily, not that common. I've seen other mature rabbits moldering by the road, but no more young 'uns since then. Can't find any videos of mother rabbits running with their babies online, so it must be a rare sight for humans to see at least.
Deer do seem to be natural selection's cannon fodder a lot of the time. Moose do okay, whether they're smarter or just big. As for Canada geese they're nice to see around here. Here they just hang out by riverbanks and sometimes on grass. If they got on the road I'm sure it would be a different story.
