Something bright

Lucky break yesterday. From my apartment I could see a Northern Cardinal perching on an overhead power line. Switched from one to the other, presumably trying to get a better view.

This bird was such a bright red that it had to have been a male. That said, Northern Cardinals are unusual in a way. Females tend to be redder than in other cardinal species. Certainly more than in the Vermilion Cardinal.

This bird must have been around all winter, since they're not really known to migrate, but I hadn't seen him.

You were very lucky to see a cardinal. I don't remember if we ever saw one in RI but we've certainly never seen one anywhere since. According to the wikipedia note they do inhabit NS but never came anywhere near where we were looking out for them.

One thing that's been interesting us the past couple of days is a pair of crows involved in a nest building project right outside our livingroom window. We don't know if they're serious about laying eggs and raising babies but we do have hopes - of course they might just be young crows getting some practice. It really isn't the best spot for a proper crow's nest, we're four stories up but that's a bit low to the ground. Still, you never know. We'll keep you posted.

It might have been a first for me. It was certainly a surprise. Their range extends to the Northeast--including Nova Scotia, as you say--and they apparently live in populated areas like suburbs and towns. They must be very good at avoiding sight, which you wouldn't expect when they're bright red.

You may just have the best seats in the house for a new crow's nest--not the nautical kind, obviously. I do hope so anyway. Crow chicks are a lovely sight.
